100 BataeƱo fisher folks/wives receive P1M DOLE livelihood aid on World Day Against Child Labor
BALANGA CITY – Some 100 fisher folks and wives residing in Bataan province over the weekend received a P1,000,000.00 livelihood assistance by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
The livelihood provision was part of the festivities commemorating the World Day Against Child Labor anchoring the theme “In conflicts and disasters, protect children from child labor.”
DOLE Regional Director Atty. Ana Dione reported to Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III that the livelihood assistance, in form of Kabuhayan Starter Kits, were distributed in Orion town.
“In observance of this year’s World Day Against Child Labor, which focuses on the impact of conflicts and disasters on child labor, we continuously work hand in hand with our partners from the local government units and other national agencies in our never-ending pursuit to eliminate or at least minimize all forms of child labor in Central Luzon,” Dione explained, adding:
“We are hopeful that our beneficiaries, who are parents of children-at-risk, will be able to maximize their livelihood starter kits and turn them to sustainable businesses that will attend to the immediate needs of their families, especially their children.”
DOLE Bataan Field Office head Leilani Reynoso, along with Local Government of Orion Representative Emmanuel Gloria and other local officials led the distribution of starter kits.
The starter kits are start-up or enhanced business tools for fishing activities which include fishing nets or “lambat” and other fishing paraphernalia--lead (tingga), rope, round floats, and nylon.
Reynoso said that all beneficiaries have undergone an Entrepreneurship Development Training (EDT) to ensure the proper management of their livelihood projects.
Aside from the starter kits, parents were handed with various educational supplies for their children in time for the start of this year’s school season.
The livelihood assistance will provide additional and sustainable income to the fisher folks and their families says Jennifer Gatdula, on behalf of her fellow beneficiaries.
Prior to the distribution of starter kits, the beneficiaries along with other stakeholders we oriented on Disaster Prevention and Safety by the Bataan Provincial Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Office.
To cap the day’s event, a signing of Pledge of Commitment of Support to raise awareness and to eradicate all worst form of child labor was initiated.
