DTI, DOLE issue workplace guidelines to prevent and control COVID-19

City of San Fernando, PAMPANGA, May 9, 2020 - The Department of Labor and Employment, together with the Department of Trade and Industry, issued the Interim Guideline on Workplace Prevention and Control of COVID-19 on Labor Day, May 1.

To reduce the spread of COVID-19, workers and employers are required to follow precautionary measures laid out in the guidelines as signed by Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III and Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez.

Both employers and workers should wear face masks when entering the workplace which employers shall provide. All should also be accomplishing daily health symptoms form/ questionnaire. 

Upon entering the premises, body temperature must always be checked. As a general rule, anyone exceeding a 37.5°C body temperature even after a 5-minute rest will be isolated and will not be allowed to enter. Any person suspected of having COVID-I9 must be brought to the nearest hospital.

The guidelines also state that employers may test their workers for COVID-19 but should provide testing kits which are to be shouldered by the employer.

Employers are obliged to provide DOLE through its regional offices a monthly reporting of illnesses, disease, and injuries through the DOLE Work Accident / Illness Report Form. They are also responsible for providing medical grade PPEs for the isolation area of the establishment.

Disinfection for frequently touched surfaces must be done at least every two hours. Equipment and vehicle entering the workplace must also undergo the same.

Physical distancing, proper respiratory etiquette, and disinfection protocols shall likewise be maintained at all times.

The formal sector is still encouraged to implement alternative work arrangements, whenever possible especially for “at risk” workers and vulnerable groups. Meetings requiring physical appearance are also to be avoided.

The guidelines shall be applicable to all establishments in the formal / private sector.
